I have to be honest with you—this topic is one that I am really passionate about. I've had stress and fatigue issues since my husband became ill about 3 years ago. But let me tell you that nutrition (and the grace of God) is what has kept me going strong.

Eating healthy, avoiding sugar and high-carb diets are a great way to combat stress. But there are also times when chronic stress can really take a toll on our ability to digest well, sleep, and think straight—there is hope, though, through proper nutrition!

This weeks Health News Roundup is full of great information that I hope you will take time to read:

• Calorie counting has become unhelpful.: Kirchoff and Weight Watchers have eliminated the company's popular "Points" system, which encouraged dieters to lose weight by eating any foods as long as they kept the portions small. The new system tries to encourage dieters to consume more natural, less processed food.

• U.S. dietary guidelines: toss calorie counter: After more than a half century of counting calories, experts are advising dieters to ditch the numbers game and take a more holistic approach to losing weight.

• Cereal box health warning after recycled cardboard study: Breakfast cereal manufacturers are to stop using recycled cardboard in packaging after a study indicated that current boxes could pose a cancer risk.

• Japanese officials admit partial nuclear meltdown now underway at nuke power plants: Contradicting earlier reports that claimed the Fukushima nuclear power plant suffered no reactor core damage, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano today admitted that a "partial core meltdown" is now underway.

• Maine gets break in federal health care overhaul: The federal government Tuesday granted Maine a waiver of a key provision in President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, citing the likelihood that enforcement could destabilize the state's market for individual health insurance.

• What NOT to Do Before Your Next Dental Appointment…: many dentists still widely prescribe antibiotics for routine dental procedures, and are simply not following the updated AHA and ADA recommendations.

• Study: Secondhand Smoke Increases Risk of Stillbirth, Birth Defects: A new review paper by University of Nottingham researchers found that secondhand-smoke exposure increased the risk of stillbirth by 23% in nonsmoking pregnant women, compared with women who were not exposed to smoke at work or at home. Passive smoking also increased the risk of congenital birth defects by 13%.

• Multiple studies link autism to mercury, which is still present in most flu vaccines: Despite recommendations made by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1999 that Thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, be removed from vaccines, the toxic chemical is still added to the majority of flu vaccines administered to women, children, and the elderly, according to the Coalition for Mercury-Free Drugs (CoMeD), a Maryland-based non-profit organization. And according to three recent studies, the symptoms of mercury poisoning are nearly identical to those of autism symptoms, which strongly suggests that mercury in vaccines is responsible for causing autism.

• Exercise-induced cell regrowth critical to reducing stress, improving health: For many years, the medical community denied the possibility that adult brain cells could regrow. But researchers now know that neurogenesis, the process of brain cell regeneration, does occur, and it plays a very important role in mitigating stress and improving sexual and reproductive function -- but it all hinges on getting plenty of regular exercise.

• FDA Requires Federal Oversight of J&J Plants After String of Drug Recalls: Federal regulators have put an injunction in place against Johnson &  Johnson’s over-the-counter (OTC) drug division following a seemingly endless string of quality control problems and drug recalls. 

• Watch out for toxic ingredients in sunscreen: The majority of sunscreens are toxic, environmental groups have warned.

• Radiation Exposure: Fast Facts About Thyroid Cancer and Other Health Risks: There's growing alarm worldwide about radiation poisoning, with an explosion Monday morning at the No. 3 reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex. A similar blast at the No. 1 reactor in the same complex released radiation into the environment on Saturday, and while officials in Japan and the World Health Organization have since described the public health risk as "quite low," concern about the potential of serious health problems abound.

Take the stress out of healthy holiday food preparation

Typically, I find holidays to be stressful with all the traveling to parties, cooking, and cleaning house. And, preparing healthy, wholesome foods during the holidays can add unnecessary stress if not planned in advance. Unfortunately stress can often interfere with the healing process and weaken our immune system

Let's take a few hours each day this week to prepare for celebrating Thanksgiving, rather than stressing out and preparing everything the night before or the day of. Let's also not forget to take some time out for ourselves to rest, relax, and make a list of what we're most grateful for.

Here are some suggestions for preparing healthy food in advance:

MONDAY:
• Make mushroom soup for the green bean casserole
• Prepare cranberry sauce and put in fridge until ready to serve
• Make sure your turkey is in the fridge thawing out (it typically takes a frozen turkey a few days to thaw)

TUESDAY:
• snap ends off of green beans and put back in the fridge until you're ready to prepare green bean casserole
• Make dessert (pumpkin pie, pumpkin muffins, or maybe carob cupcakes)

WEDNESDAY:
• Make green bean casserole and store in fridge until ready to bake (30-40 minutes before serving turkey)
• Make stuffing and store in fridge until ready to stuff the turkey
• Slice onions and make crispy onions for the green bean casserole.

THURSDAY:
• Stuff and prepare turkey, then bake. Temperature for a cooked turkey is 180 degrees.
• When the turkey is done, take the juices and fat and make homemade gravy.
• Make mashed potatoes or a healthy sweet potato casserole.
• Bake green bean casserole 30-40 minutes for dinner time.
• Warm whole grain rolls or bread just before serving.

Now, hopefully you aren't preparing ALL of these things, and you are delegating to friends and family. We have to remember that we get together and celebrate the holidays with those we are thankful for—wouldn't it be nice to spend lots of time with our loved ones rather than in the kitchen? Inviting others to help prepare healthy options is a good way to make sure everyone enjoys a healthy holiday with lots of love and laughter.

Remember, the less processed your holiday fare, the better you'll feel after the holiday. So, skip the sugar and make good choices full of protein, fruits and vegetables and whole grains. 5 natural solutions for clearing up acne

I love when my skin is soft and acne free. It's a good sign that everything on the inside is functioning properly. When it flairs up with those little, red, sometimes painful bumps we call acne, it may be a symptom of something wrong on the inside.

Here are 5 things you can do naturally to clear up acne:

1. Eat a well-balanced diet rich in raw fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water. The anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, and vitamins found in healthy, unprocessed foods will help clear up your skin. Avoid junk food, sugar (especially), and sugary drinks.

2. Do not use harsh chemicals on your skin. Chemicals found in toners, moisturizers, and makeup will more than likely increase inflammation and contribute to the problem. Rule of thumb: if you can't pronounce or recognize the ingredients on the label, it probably isn't good for you. Wash your face in the morning and right before bed with tepid water and an all-natural soap.

• Use aluminum-free baking soda mixed with a little water (to form a paste) as a gentle exfoliator.
• Tea tree oil is a great at fighting acne. Apply with a Q-tip directly to problem area
• A homemade apple-cider vinegar facial toner is wonderful at absorbing oil and kills bacteria that may cause acne.

3. Get adequate sleep and de-stress. If your body is tired and/or stressed, it may show signs of distress through your skin.

4. Keep your hands away from your face. I have a habit of resting my cheeks in my hands or rubbing my face mid-day. Dirt and bacteria that gets onto hands will transfer to your face if you touch it. Keeping hands washed and away from your face will prevent dirt and bacteria from getting trapped in your pores. Also, keep hair clean and free of product with chemicals that can get into your pores.

5. Wash pillows and pillowcases often in a chemical-free detergent to avoid irritation and dirt transferring to your skin overnight.
